David Clarkson will have to wait to make his regular season Toronto Maple Leafs debut. Clarkson was assessed a 10-minute penalty for leaving the bench to join an altercation in the third period of the Leafs Sunday night preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres. The penalty carries with it an automatic 10-game suspension. "Were not proud or happy that went on, thats for sure," Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle told reporters after the game. "I think Dave Clarkson made a mistake and now well pay for it." NHL Rule 70.10 states: "The first player to leave the players or penalty bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended without pay for the next 10 regular league and/or playoff games of his team." Clarkson wont be eligible to make his Leafs debut until Oct. 25 when his team visits the Columbus Blue Jackets. A brawl erupted between the two teams when Sabres forward John Scott dropped his gloves and went after Leafs forward Phil Kessel. That fight came just seconds after a fight between Leafs forward Jamie Devane and the Sabres Corey Tropp. Kessel would not drop his gloves to fight Scott, but instead swung his stick twice at Scott. His actions resulted in both slashing and fighting penalties. Scott was given five- and 10-minute misconducts as well as a game misconduct. In total, the incident amounted in over 100 penalty minutes being assessed, including five-minute fighting majors to goaltenders Ryan Miller and Jonathan Bernier. Kessel received a match penalty for his retaliation on Scott, a ruling imposed for deliberate attempt to injure another player. The NHL Rulebook states that any player given a match penalty "shall be automatically suspended from further competition" until a ruling is handed down by the Commissioner. The Maple Leafs would win the game 5-3. Last week, Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette was handed a 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to fight Los Angeles Kings forward Jordan Nolan. Nestor and Zimonjic, the tournaments top seeds, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Rohan Bopanna of India and Pakistans Asiam-Ul-Haq Qureshi. Nestor and Zimonjic beat Bopanna and Ul-Haq Qureshi in the doubles final of a tournament in Sydney last month. But they were outplayed this time by Bopanna and Ul-Haq Qureshi, who needed 68 minutes to secure the win. "They were better, we probably didnt get enough first serves in," said Nestor. "When we both had chances to play they put more pressure on us. "We just didnt play well all around." Nestor, 41, was playing in his third ATP final in five weeks, winning in Brisbane and Sydney while also earning the Australian Open mixed title with Kristina Mladenovic of France. Nestor won the Dubai title in 2002 with Mark Knowles of thee Bahamas but was unable to repeat the feat 12 years later.dddddddddddd He and Zimonjic saved three set points in the final game of the 35-minute first set. But they were finally caught by a shovelled winner down the line which ended a fierce volley duel at the net between all of the four players. Bopanna and Ul-Haq Qureshi took control of the second set with a break of Zimonjic for a 3-1 lead en route to the victory. "Weve won some matches this week so thats a good thing," said Nestor. "Doubles seems to turn on just a few points, who knows anything can happen. "We can beat anyone or lose to anyone at any time." Nestor still needs a win to move into third all-time in the post-1968 Open. He currently has 83 career wins, tied with Australian Todd Woodbridge and behind Mike Bryan (96) and Bob Bryan (94). Nestor and Zimonjic have won 25 titles together with Nestor having played in 137 doubles finals. ' ' '
