LEXINGTON, Ohio -- Scott Dixon and his Target Chip Ganassi team had planned on four pit stops. Then Dixon changed his mind -- and his and his teams luck. Dixon went from last in qualifying to capture his fifth win at Mid-Ohio in the last eight years, coasting in on low fuel Sunday to finally end his teams victory drought in 2014. "It was probably around Lap 30, we had to really go for it and switch it up," he said about the altered game plan to go hard and then conserve fuel while playing keep-away with the lead. The 34-year-old New Zealander, who started last in the 22-car field, also won on the twisty road course between Cleveland and Columbus in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. "To come from last to even a top-10 here was going to be extremely difficult to do," he said. "But we laid down some quick laps, passed some people and then hung on." Target Chip Ganassi has won the last six races at the track, breaking through this season in a familiar place. Pole-sitter Sebastien Bourdais was a distant second, with James Hinchcliffe third, rookie Carlos Munoz fourth and favourite son Graham Rahal fifth. "(Starting) 17th to (finishing) third sounds impressive until you talk about Scott," Hinchcliffe joked. "Hes got to go and showboat, like he always does here." Dixon led a total of 45 laps, winning the strategy battle against the top contenders while capturing his 34th series win and first since Houston last October. He beat runner-up Bourdais by 5.3864 seconds. Almost immediately after getting the checkered flag, just after going past pit row, he pulled quickly over into the grass near the first turn and pumped his fist to fans. He was not out of gas, he said. But he could have been. "The (low) fuel light came up with about a lap and a half to go," he said. "If you were listening to the radio, you would have heard a lot of random chatter. We conserved for most of the last lap. The way our year has gone, its a wonder I didnt run out and have to walk back." It was the farthest back a winner had started since Max Papis won at Laguna Seca in 2001. But Dixon has done this before. In 2001, he started 23rd at Nazareth and came all the way through the field to win. After qualifying went poorly in the rain Saturday, Dixon said, "Not the best qualifying weve had this year, I can tell you that. There just wasnt any grip to be found out there. Well have to come up with a great strategy tomorrow to dig us out of this hole." Thats exactly what they did. Will Power, second in the drivers standings coming in, took over the No. 1 spot when leader Helio Castroneves had throttle problems on a pace lap. Power finished sixth while Castroneves, who would end up with the fastest lap of the day, was 19th. Bourdais, after winning his second pole of the season, maintained the lead for most of the opening 30 laps. But there were surprises early. Castroneves, who started 15th, was four laps behind because of the early problems. The race hadnt had a single caution the last two years, but that didnt last long. On the opening lap there was a mishap on the sharp turn called the keyhole that resulted in the noses getting knocked off the cars of Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan. Josef Newgarden, who qualified No. 2 behind Bourdais, slotted into second spot early and stalked the leader. He pulled right behind Dixon, who took the lead on lap 68. Newgarden fell back during a disastrous pit stop in which he drove over a hose and his crew stumbled filling the car with fuel and changing tires. He finished 12th. Dixon grabbed the lead and didnt let go, pushing his lead to seven seconds through 70 laps. He sat on the lead the rest of the way, going hard until that fuel light popped on. "The fastest car won the race," Bourdais said. "I was hoping he wouldnt make the fuel (last). But it was pretty clear when he stopped the last time that he would do it." Dixon thanked the makers of his Chevrolet for something rarely mentioned in race cars. "We got fantastic fuel mileage out there," he said, laughing. Kole Calhoun drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Brian Matusz in the eighth inning after a tying RBI double by Erick Aybar, and the Angels pulled out a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. "Koles developed into a player thats very comfortable in the batters box against righties or lefties, and hes going to give you that tough at-bat," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Hes going to grind it out every which way, no matter what the situation is. He did a good job with the bases loaded. If he got a pitch in the zone, youre confident hes going to put a good swing on it. He didnt get one this time and took his walk. That was a great at-bat." The Angels, who came in leading the majors in runs scored, stranded two runners in scoring position in the first, fifth and sixth innings. The Angels were 0 for 12 in those situations Wednesday, and 3 for 25 during the three-game series. Weaver (11-6) allowed two runs and six hits through eight innings, striking out six and walking none before the Angels recorded their major league-best 31st come-from-behind win. The right-hander won his fourth straight decision. "My fastball command has been pretty good the last couple of games, and I feel like Im getting stronger every time out," Weaver said. "So I just want to keep working on it and keep establishing it because it sets up everything else. It was nice to keep us in it, limit the pitch count early and get deep in the game. Then the offence took care of the rest later on." Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman allowed a run and five hits over six innings, stranded seven runners in scoring position and picked off another at second base before handing a 2-1 lead to Tommy Hunter. Josh Hamilton led off the eighth with a bloop single off Hunter (2-2) and came all the way around on Aybars double to left-centre. A two-out intentional walk to Efren Navarro and another walk to Chris Iannetta loaded the bases for Calhoun, who walked on a 3-1 pitch. "I dont think it really got away from me. I thought I pitched pretty well," Hunter said. "I didnt feel like I was juust missing.dddddddddddd I felt like I was making pretty quality pitches and they just didnt swing at them. They got a hit and a couple of walks. Thats the way the story unfolded tonight." Huston Street pitched a hitless ninth for his first save since joining the Angels last Friday in a trade with the San Diego Padres. Baltimore took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when David Lough singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Adam Jones flare to short right field. Eight of the Orioles 10 runs in the series came with two outs. Ryan Flaherty, starting at third base for the second straight game because of Manny Machados stiff back, made a diving backhanded stop of Mike Trouts first-inning grounder behind the bag but couldnt get the throw to first in time. Trout scored on Albert Pujols single high off the 18-foot wall in right-centre. "Thats a do-or-die play with him," Flaherty said of Trouts infield hit. "When he hits a ball like that youve got to hope he trips in order to get him out." Pujols RBI was his 31st in his last 34 games and 66th this season. The three-time NL MVP had at least 100 RBIs in 10 of his first 11 big league seasons. The only exception was 2011, when he had 99. "Alberts important to us. We dont need him to carry us, but we need him to do what hes capable of. And were seeing it," Scioscia said. "Alberts last 50 at-bats, I think youre able to see that hes been able to use the whole field and hes finding that swing. Tonight he drove the ball to right-centre to score Mike and then hit a double down the line." The Orioles tied it in the third on a two-out RBI single by Nick Markakis after Flaherty hit a ground-rule double and tagged up on Nick Hundleys fly ball.
